Hailing from Carmarthenshire in South Wales, Suzanna James is an award-winning textile artist and designer of iconic, made to measure, luxury knitwear inspired by the landscape of Wales. Having been surrounded by beautiful landscapes her entire life, nature has served as constant visual inspiration to her works.
Having studied Fashion Design at Westminster, she subsequently specialised in Knitwear at Winchester School of Art. Today she produces collections from her home studio, as a maker of knitwear encapsulating ethics and sustainability.
The work of Suzanna James has been most recently recognised by Wales Arts International (Grant Award 2019), Arts Council of Wales (Grant Award 2018), and the Abury Design Experience (Finalist 2018). She has also been awarded The Textiles Society Undergraduate Award, the Winchester School of Art and Peter Jensen Fashion Textiles Award, and placed within the David Band Textiles Award and TEXPRINT’s ‘Top Graduates’ in 2015.’
Driven by her materials, Suzanna James makes entirely traceable, season-less, storytelling knitwear, handmade with careful consideration of both ethics and aesthetics. Pieces are made to last with labour intensive, uniquely developed cable knit and felted textures. She actively seeks out extraordinary yarns by working with pioneer producers creating small batches of single origin, hand spun, fairly traded and vegetarian ‘living yarns’. The yarns are naturally dyed by expert dyers using foraged and botanical extracts, or dyed organically. Every piece is made with care and acts as a visual embodiment of sustainable, natural beauty.
